The reef knot is used to tie reef points in a sail. Otherwise, the knot
both jams and slips. If it weren't for using it in shoe laces, probably
wouldn't be mentioned at all. The traditional catch phrase is "left over
right, then right over left."
Step by Step Instructions
Cross the line from the right over the line from the left
Loop each working part around, with the new working end from the left
passing over the one on the right
Now tuck each working end over and through the opposing loop
